Mining Tracks of Competitive Video Games

The development and professionalization of a video game requires tools for analyzing the practice of the players and teams, their tactics and strategies. These games are very popular and by nature numerical, they provide many tracks that we analyzed in terms of team play. We studied Defense of the Ancients (DotA), a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA), where two teams battle in a game very similar to rugby or American football. Through topological measures - area of polygon described by the players, inertia, diameter, distance to the base - that are independent of the exact nature of the game, we show that the outcome of the match can be relevantly predicted. Mining e-sport's tracks is opening interest in further application of these tools for analyzing real time sport.http://wikicfp.com/cfp/servlet/event.showcfp?eventid=35698©ownerid=518

On the Interference Immunity of Visible Light Communication (VLC)

International audienceVisible Light Communication (VLC) relies on the dual use of existing light infrastructure for wirelessly send data. VLC is regarded as a "green", cost-effective and secure communication technology. Moreover, VLC has been always considered immune to Radio Frequency (RF) waves. The only type of interference that has always been included in the channel model is the optical interference. Nevertheless, all the interference components potentially impacting on the performance of the system should be integrated in the transmitting model in order to improve the performance of the communication system. In this paper, we investigate on the interference and immunity of the VLC systems in respect of frequencies spanning the spectrum up to 1 GHz. We provide a detailed evaluation of the immunity of a VLC system by the means of experiments realized in "controlled" environment, i.e. an anechoic chamber, by considering interference at different power levels. Results are very interesting, since at specific frequency values, the VL transmitted signal results too "interfered" and noisy to be correctly recovered. In order to evaluate the impact of this interference, we have estimated the Bit Error Rate (BER) for different index modulations of Pulse-Position Modulation (mPPM)

Real-time 3D electromagnetic field measurement instrument with direct visualization

Nowadays, a wide variety of terminals are proposed to nomadic users. Generally these terminals provide wireless communication operating at frequencies between one and a few GHz. For technical reasons, including multiple access to the communication channel and battery autonomy, these terminals transmit only during very short periods i.e. transmission bursts. For a direct observation of certain characteristics of the transmitted signals radiated by such terminals, only a few measurement setups exist. This article proposes such a novel real-time 3D electromagnetic field measurement instrument with direct visualization. The prototype used for validation is based on an array of probes regularly attached on a non-conductive rigid loop which is put into fast rotation around the terminal under test.

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT. Mussel as a Tool to Define Continental Watershed Quality

    Get PDF
Bivalves appear as relevant sentinel species in aquatic ecotoxicology and water quality assessment. This is particularly true in marine ecosystems. In fact, several biomonitoring frameworks in the world used mollusks since several decades on the base of contaminant accumulation (Mussel Watch, ROCCH) and/or biological responses called biomarker (OSPAR) measurements. In freshwater systems, zebra and quagga mussels could represent alternative sentinels, which could be seen as the counterparts of mussel marine species. This chapter presents original studies and projects underlying the interest of these freshwater mussels for water quality monitoring based on contaminant accumulation and biomarker development measurements. These sentinel species could be used as a tool for chemical/biological monitoring of biota under the European water framework directive and for the development of effect-based monitoring tools

Occlusion of LTP-Like Plasticity in Human Primary Motor Cortex by Action Observation

    Get PDF
Passive observation of motor actions induces cortical activity in the primary motor cortex (M1) of the onlooker, which could potentially contribute to motor learning. While recent studies report modulation of motor performance following action observation, the neurophysiological mechanism supporting these behavioral changes remains to be specifically defined. Here, we assessed whether the observation of a repetitive thumb movement – similarly to active motor practice – would inhibit subsequent long-term potentiation-like (LTP) plasticity induced by paired-associative stimulation (PAS). Before undergoing PAS, participants were asked to either 1) perform abductions of the right thumb as fast as possible; 2) passively observe someone else perform thumb abductions; or 3) passively observe a moving dot mimicking thumb movements. Motor evoked potentials (MEP) were used to assess cortical excitability before and after motor practice (or observation) and at two time points following PAS. Results show that, similarly to participants in the motor practice group, individuals observing repeated motor actions showed marked inhibition of PAS-induced LTP, while the “moving dot” group displayed the expected increase in MEP amplitude, despite differences in baseline excitability. Interestingly, LTP occlusion in the action-observation group was present even if no increase in cortical excitability or movement speed was observed following observation. These results suggest that mere observation of repeated hand actions is sufficient to induce LTP, despite the absence of motor learning
